The daughter of actor John Ritter and\u00a0granddaughter of country singer Tex Ritter, Carly Ritter has a rich entertainment pedigree. She grew up listening to the\u00a0rock \u2019n\u2019 roll in her parents\u2019 record collection, and played classical piano and harp as a teen. But it wasn\u2019t until Ritter began studies at the\u00a0University of St. Andrews in Scotland that she finally understood the musical draw of her family legacy. \u201cThat was a special time for me,\u201d she says. \u201cI was exposed to these old ballads, and the imagery was strong, heartbreaking, haunting and beautiful.\u201d Ritter later contemplated a variety of career options\u2014administrative assistant, actress, nurse\u2014but the seeds of a musical career had been planted. \u201cWhen I came back to the States, I spent my last year of college in the basement of the library scouring sheet music for all these old folk songs, spirituals, blues and country songs,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
Ritter\u2019s self-titled debut album was recorded in a vintage Hollywood studio with a producing team that included husband\u00a0and wife Joachim Cooder and Juliette Commagere, along with Joachim\u2019s father, legendary guitarist Ry Cooder, and Juliette\u2019s brother, multi-instrumentalist Robert Francis. \u201cJoachim and Juliette have such a feel for mid-\u201960s and \u201970s music, and they\u2019ve got this amazing sound,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd of course, Ry Cooder and Robert Francis. They all know that music so well, and how to bring that feel to my songs.\u201d After completing a four-song demo, Ritter was offered a deal with Vanguard Records, which meant further collaborations with her new team. \u201cIt was so humbling to be in a room with all of them, seeing how they work and communicate,\u201d she says. \u201cThey speak this special language. It was so\u00a0much fun to be part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
