Fortunately, the Athens, Ga., quintet doesn\u2019t sound much like either band on its sophomore album, <em>Sugar<\/em>. Recorded in New Jersey with producer John Agnello, the record has a tough sound built around muscular guitarscapes and terse, stripped-down songs. On \u201cRun From the Gun,\u201d singer Hardy Morris\u2019 voice sounds at first like it\u2019s coming through a megaphone outside your house\u2014and he\u2019s getting ominously closer. \u201cQuiet Kid\u201d is anything but, with thick layers of scuzzy, overdriven guitar obscuring Morris\u2019 vocals. The bold, bright single \u201cGiving It All Away\u201d features crooning harmony vocals and a massive, scorching guitar solo from Dinosaur Jr.\u2019s J Mascis.
