Williams. Nevertheless, Free\u2019s own efforts leave no doubt as to his direction. He carries the frenzied, heavy-handed blues that initially inspired him into hard rock realms previously trod by Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Robin Trower. His visceral take on a generous sampling of Hendrix tunes\u2014 \u201cHey Baby\/New Rising Sun,\u201d an extended \u201cVoodoo Chile (Slight Return)\u201d and a powerful \u201cVoodoo Chile Blues\u201d\u2014provide obvious reference points for a blistering style that gives <em>American Horse<\/em> its power. Elsewhere, the riveting \u201cNew York, New York\u201d and emotive \u201cHeather\u2019s Arms\u201d showcase his melodic prowess.
