But despite its title, <i>Honey Locust Honky Tonk<\/i> isn\u2019t the super-prolific singer-songwriter\u2019s traditional country music addition to his vast catalog. (The only thing vaguely country is the cowboy hat Pollard sports on the album\u2019s cover and the outlaw-themed \u201cI Killed a Man Who Looks Like You.\u201d) In fact, it doesn\u2019t sound all that different than most of the albums he\u2019s released, either on his own or with Guided by Voices, over the past 20 years. It\u2019s a little cleaner than the band\u2019s recent lowest-fi outings, and Pollard stretches his usual \u201960s pop and \u201980s New Wave parameters to include some <i>Scary Monsters<\/i>-era David Bowie on \u201cHer Eyes Play Tricks on the Camera.\u201d But just to remind you that this is Pollard, the 17-song album clocks in at less than 35 minutes.
