Primarily known as a jazz trumpeter and composer, he\u2019s worked as an educator and written music for films, theater and even opera. So when he actually gets around to releasing proper jazz records it\u2019s an event. Happily, <i>Magnetic <\/i>is as strong as anything he\u2019s produced. Surrounding himself with his regular quintet, Blanchard surveys various strains of contemporary jazz, altering moods, shifting tempos and keeping jams lively. When it\u2019s necessary, Blanchard plays the hell out of his horn, but this is an integrated work, and both individually and collectively, his band members shine. A handful of guests add their voices, but Blanchard\u2019s vision always hovers at the surface.
