Plenty of great music\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The trailer for the upcoming CBGB<\/i> movie has just gone up and not surprisingly, people who were there<\/i> are already complaining.
\nRoger Friedman\u2019s Showbiz411.com entertainment news site reports that \u201ceveryone who ever went there is ducking and hiding,\u201d notably including Linda Ramone, widow of Johnny Ramone. She doesn\u2019t like the casting for Johnny (he\u2019s played by Puerto Rican actor Julian Acosta, who apparently \u201clooks nothing like\u201d the \u201cIrish and pale\u201d Johnny).<\/p>\n

Linda\u2019s also miffed about not being consulted by the producers, but most grievously, that there\u2019s no Ramones music on the soundtrack\u2014though she says she approved only one song. True, The Ramones were the paramount CBGB band (trust me, I wrote the first book on The Ramones), but there were plenty others\u2014Blondie, Talking Heads, The Police, Television, to name four who apparently did make the soundtrack cut.<\/p>\n

\"CBGB_Poster\"On Facebook, yesterday some posters who are likewise in the know were already quarreling with everything from the casting (\u201cWhat\u2019s with Alan Rickman\u2019s accent?\u201d one wondered of the great English actor\u2019s representation of CBGB owner Hilly Kristal\u2019s laconic, low energy manner) to the production (\u201cThe only way this movie could be authentic is if it were filmed in Odorama,\u201d another volunteered, citing the club\u2019s legendary smell of \u201cstale beer, staler sweat and Camel cigarettes with a soupcon of urine\u201d).<\/p>\n

But from the trailer, my guess is that the movie will be a hoot, if not a scream. Looks like there will be plenty of great music whoever plays the players, and the set looks exactly as I remember it. Rickman\u2019s so good to begin with that accent notwithstanding, maybe he\u2019ll get the Oscar nod he deserved for the Harry Potter<\/i> flicks, whose key kid actor Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), by the way, is also in as the Dead Boys’ Cheetah Chrome.<\/p>\n

But really, so long as they focus on music and period detail\u2014plot, dialog and portrayal only get in the way.<\/p>\n
