Web-Exclusive Interview with M Music & Musicians magazine publisher, Merlin David

How did the idea of “Love Leads to Nothing” come to you?

It came from feeling you’ve invested so much love and energy into a relationship, and it falls by the wayside. But even though that relationship ended, you still feel something. It’s coming to terms with yourself—and that’s when we choose to love, even when a relationship doesn’t work out.

What is your creative process for writing songs?

My creative process varies based on whatever is happening at the moment. I usually start with playing around with my guitar. I listen for sounds and notes that feel good and catchy. Then I use that as a launching point. I mumble some words, trying to find what I want to say. Sometimes ideas come when I’m driving or walking. It’s all about the feeling with me.

What songwriting tip would you like to offer?

Being honest with what you’re feeling at the moment. Every day, write down your experiences. That way, you always have a topic to choose from.

Are you working on a new project?

My new album is titled, Emmett Skyy, and it comes out later this year. “Love Leads to Nothing” is the single, and is the only song available right now on iTunes. It’s been a long journey working on this album, and I have so many wonderful people helping me with it. I can’t wait for people to hear it.

Top 5 Musicians or Songwriters who inspired you?

Marvin Gaye, Johnny Cash, John Mayer, Thom Yorke, Barbra Streisand.

One instrument or equipment that you can’t live without—that helps you write, record or perform?

My Martin acoustic/electric guitar goes everywhere with me. A fresh Monster quarter-inch cord to plug it in—is always a must. I won’t leave home without it.
