GLISS

Langsom Dans

This L.A. trio’s song titles are telling. “Blur” describes the guitars—gorgeously bleak and distorted—while “Waves” sums up those wonderful washes of bittersweet synth. “Weight of Love” is the thematic centerpiece, a measurement not easily calculated. Like sometime tour mates the Raveonettes, Gliss makes music that’s both heavy and weightless, filled with big sounds yet fitted with moments of stark electro-pop minimalism. Of course, this mix is nothing new. “Black Is Blue” opens with an ode to vinyl records, and while it’s easy to imagine singer Victoria Cecilia’s collection (Cocteau Twins, Julee Cruise, Jesus and Mary Chain), it’s easier to make like a “Kite in the Sky” and float into oblivion.
