CRUSHED OUT

Want to Give

Jack White will leave behind boxcars of boss records, but his real legacy may be the male-female guitar-drum duo, a rock ’n’ roll model he virtually invented with the White Stripes. The latest—and one of the greatest—to follow his coed thud ’n’ thrash lead are Crushed Out, the husband-and-wife team of Frank Hoier and Moselle Spiller. These lovebirds dig Buddy Holly, the Ramones and most likely Motorhead, and on their debut album, they roll garage, country, blues, doo-wop and punk into 10 concise and catchy tunes. With “Shake Can Well” and “Push Down and Twist,” they give us a pair of would-be dance crazes. Chomping surfabilly standout “Sharkbite” makes three, provided flailing counts as dancing.
