DISPATCH

Circles Around the Sun

This insanely popular New England band’s first album in 12 years takes its name from the leadoff track—an underdog story that may be a parable for Dispatch itself. As the song opens, doctors rocket a sickly child into space, and after a few years in orbit, he returns “with a smile as big as the whole world.” Formed in Vermont, this markedly un-hip trio logged mad miles in the ’90s, becoming an unrivaled—and unlikely—live phenomenon. Here, they show why. Dispatch does briskly strummed, instantly likeable acoustic pop, occasionally sidestepping into Americana (“Josaphine”), folkie rap “Not Messin’” and quasi-Eastern fare (“Sign of the Times”). They could have named the album for its closer, “Feels So Good.”
