Kick in the Head
Somewhere between Canada and Spain (the countries in which she grew up) and New York City (where she now lives), Luthea Salom surely experienced some heartbreak. She loved, lost and learned, putting her in the same boat as 99.9 percent of the world’s population. So Kick in the Head, her third album, is the sound of an exceptional songwriter coming to terms with the unexceptional nature of her own “little tragedies.” On “Be Me” and the predictably bouncy “Happy,” she resolves to make the best of circumstances. Thanks to her lyrics—cute and clever affirmations that never become coffee-mug slogans—and tastefully twee guitar and ukulele, we’re all the better for her self-betterment.
