LAURA STEVENSON
& THE CANS

Sit Resist

[Don Giovanni]

Laura Stevenson covers a lot of ground on the second album with her band the Cans. She does sunny pop, rootsy angst and rock ’n’ roll bite, bringing an infectious charm to each of them with her sweet, slightly rumpled voice. Sometimes she murmurs as if singing to herself, and sometimes she lets fly with full-throated bursts. She does both on lead single “Master of Art,” a standout track that builds from classic girl-group pop to a sparkling refrain that will stick in your head for days. Stevenson intertwines her vocal with lilting accordion on “The Healthy One,” sings with ringing power over solo piano on “Finish Piece,” and creates a dusty vocal symphony with multi-tracked harmonies on “Red Clay Roots,” which has the feel of an old 78 crackling through the Victrola. It’s a powerful song on an engaging album from a singer and songwriter who’s very much on her way up. –Eric R. Danton
