Two-Way Family Favourites

They always seemed an unlikely musical couple, but for their second album together, Cockney pop punk Wreckless Eric and the unassuming Amy Rigby show their common roots through a heady cache of rock standards. Appropriating the formula mined by Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs for their Under the Covers collaborations, Eric and Amy apply a twelve-string sheen, quiet harmonies and a haunting perspective to these songs. For the most part, the tunes retain their original stylistic template—“In My Room” echoes the ache of the Beach Boys’ original, Tom Petty’s “Walls” basks in wistful remorse, ABBA’s “Fernando” is serene yet surreal—but their affinity for the material lands the emotional connection every time.
