All in Good TimeBARENAKED LADIES

All in Good Time

[Raisin’ Records]

Nearly two decades have passed since Barenaked Ladies burst on the scene with such crowd-pleasers as “If I Had $1000000.” Tagged early on as a novelty act, the Canadian group has since evolved into a sophisticated pop band, albeit one that continues to serve up its songs with a wink and a nod. For the most part, All in Good Time marks another solid step in that evolution. Rife with shimmery piano ballads and chiming guitar rockers, the disc falls squarely into a brainy lineage that includes 10cc and Fountains of Wayne. High points include the soul-pop piano ditty “On the Lookout,” the calypso-tinged “Jerome” and the galloping, acoustic-guitar-driven ballad “Ordinary.” Barenaked Ladies can still be overly cute—heard once, the silly “Four Seconds” comes off as a joke you would just as soon not hear again—but fans of witty pop-rock will find much to savor. – Russell Hall
